Last year was a tale of two seasons for the Philadelphia Eagles, who started off the season with 10-1, including a 5-0 start, but had an epic collapse, losing six of their next seven games (including the playoffs).
It is not over-dramatic to say it was the biggest collapse in NFL history considering that they not only lost six of seven games, but posted a point differential of -82 in that stretch as well.
Philadelphia lost two games by 30-plus points, fell to the Giants by 17 in the last game of the season and followed that up with a lifeless, 23-point loss in the playoffs to the Buccaneers.
A lot of people were calling for head coach Nick Sirianni to lose his job over this collapse, but the Eagles held on to him and instead decided to change both coordinator positions. Philly brought in Kellen Moore as offensive coordinator and Vic Fangio as defensive coordinator this offseason.

FanDuel | DraftKings | Caesars | |
Super Bowl Odds | +1300 | +1500 | +1300 |
NFC Champion Odds | +550 | +700 | +525 |
NFC East Winner Odds | -125 | -110 | -130 |
Win Total Over: 10.5 | -154 | -130 | -150 |
Win Total Under: 10.5 | +126 | +110 | +125 |
Those odds place the Eagles as the favorite to win the NFC East, the third-favorite to win the NFC, and the sixth-favorite to win the Super Bowl. So, the sportsbooks are not quite pricing the Eagles as the best in the NFL based on last year's 10-1 start, but they are expecting them to be closer to that team than the one that we saw at the end of the season.
It is admittedly hard to get a read on what the Eagles will look like this year. We know the ceiling is the Super Bowl-caliber team that we saw in 2022 and for the first half of 2023. But they could also be among the worst teams in the NFL, like they were in the second half of 2023.
Philadelphia Eagles 2024 Outlook
Head coach Nick Sirianni is an easy target for criticism with his sideline antics and the way he failed to stop last year's slide, but in three seasons as the Eagles head coach, he has had success in all three seasons. He has one Super Bowl appearance, two 11-plus win seasons, and has made the playoffs in all three years.
Can Kellen Moore Modernize the Eagles Offense?
Last year's stink is hard to wash away, but the Eagles made upgrades at both coordinator positions, starting with Kellen Moore as the new OC. The Eagles offense was vanilla and unimaginative last year, but Moore should bring new life to the team.
In 2023, the Eagles had the lowest motion rate in the entire NFL, running motion a paltry 10.9% of the time, according to ESPN Stats & Info. For reference, the league average was 22%. Moore's offenses have consistently been among the leaders in motion rate, so this will be a welcome change from 2023.
Moore also has elite talent to work with across the board with the Eagles offense. According to PFF, they have the second-best offensive line, eighth-best running back room and third-best set of skill receiving options (including WRs and tight ends). Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is also PFF's ninth-rated QB heading into 2024.
So, talent is not an issue with the Eagles, it was scheme and play-calling in 2023, which seems to be solved by the Kellen Moore hire. Early reports out of training camp indicate that Hurts looks sharp and in command of the offense, so it is not out of the question to expect him to come close to the 2022 campaign, when he was in MVP contention until a late-season shoulder injury.
Can Vic Fangio Solidify the Eagles Defense?
The Eagles' issues to end the 2023 season included their defense becoming a complete clownshow down the stretch. Sean Desai started the season as the Eagles defensive coordinator, but they quietly made a change to Matt Patricia to run the defense in the middle of the season, a move that ended in disaster.
In the last seven games of the year, the Eagles defense allowed an average of 30.6 points per game, which would have been the most points allowed in the NFL if extrapolated out to the entire season. Commentators were regularly noting that it seemed as though the Eagles' defensive line, linebackers and secondary were playing three completely different schemes.
While Moore was brought in as OC to bring some life to the offense, Vic Fangio was hired to bring stability on defense.
The talent defensively is not quite on the same level as the Eagles offense, but it is not as though there is nothing to work with, either. PFF gives the Eagles the third-best defensive line in NFL, and while their secondary is ranked 24th, the Eagles have a lot of youth at that position group, which could easily vault the D back up to the top unit that we saw in 2022. Fangio does not need to make the Eagles a top-three defense, but this cannot be the 29th-ranked unit (per DVOA) that it was last year.
Philadelphia Eagles 2024 Best Bets
Win Total: Over 10.5 (-130) DraftKings
In terms of an official bet to make on the win total, the over is the way to go. As detailed earlier, the Eagles have done nothing but win since Nick Sirianni took over, and there are a lot of reasons to have faith they will not come close to repeating the disastrous end of 2023. In 2023, the Eagles had among the hardest schedules in the NFL, but that has flipped in 2024. SharpFootballAnalysis gives the Eagles the ninth-easiest schedule in the NFL.
We are only two years removed from the Eagles going toe-to-toe with Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs in the Super Bowl, and with upgrades at both coordinator positions, it is not completely far-fetched to think that the Eagles can come close to that level of success in 2024.
So, sprinkling them at +700 (DraftKings) to make it to the Super Bowl is another solid value bet.
