September’s reputation as the worst month of the year historically, preceded it with sharp declines on the first day of trading. This invoked feelings of déjà vu as some of the factors that drove the weakness at the start of August at play again including Yen strength, tech weakness, a disappointing ISM manufacturing survey and a surge in the VIX which jumped to over 20 after closing last week ~15. It was a gap and go trend day with the S&P 500 falling over 2% testing its 50d ma (~5,505), with tech stocks particularly semiconductors leading to the downside (ICE Semi Index -7.7%). Commodities and related stocks also got hit very hard as another round of weak economic data out of China heightened global growth concerns. That being said, none of the headlines or economic data suggested a shift in the current backdrop once again suggesting that there were technical factors at play. The unabated rally throughout August caught traders off guard and this seemed to be one of the “aftershocks” that we had previously discussed.
